Understanding API 6A Wellhead Equipment Pressure Ratings
A pressure rating is an important input, but it is only one part of a wellhead equipment specification. The selected configuration must also satisfy the required materials, temperature, performance and documentation criteria.

1. What does API 6A cover?
API Specification 6A is commonly referenced for wellhead and Christmas tree equipment. A project may specify a particular edition and additional requirements for equipment design, materials, performance, inspection, testing and documentation. The applicable specification and contract documents should be reviewed together; a general reference to API 6A does not define every detail by itself.
2. Read the pressure rating in context
A stated working pressure identifies a pressure capability under the applicable product specification and qualification basis. It does not mean that every component, material, temperature or configuration in a product family has the same rating. Check the exact model, connection, bore, material and configuration against the current datasheet and manufacturer confirmation.
3. Pressure is not the only class
Product specification level (PSL), material class, temperature class and performance requirements address different aspects of equipment selection. Their applicability depends on the project specification and service conditions. Do not infer a particular PSL, material class or performance validation solely from the pressure rating or a general brochure statement.
4. Connections, seals and compatibility
Confirm flange or connector type, size, bore, seal design and mating equipment. A pressure rating does not guarantee that two components are mechanically compatible or that the complete stack meets the project design. Review the approved wellhead schematic, stack-up drawing and interface details before ordering.
5. Testing, traceability and certificates
Clarify required pressure and functional tests, inspection scope, material traceability, certificates, third-party inspection and final documentation. If performance qualification such as PR testing is required, confirm what was tested, the applicable model or design family, the test basis and the evidence available for the offered configuration. Avoid treating a general brochure statement as proof of qualification for every model.
6. Procurement checklist
Request the current datasheet and drawings; confirm working pressure, temperature envelope, PSL, material and temperature classes, connections, fluid and sour-service conditions, testing and inspection requirements, certificate type and delivery documentation. Record any deviation and obtain engineering approval before accepting an alternative.
7. Conclusion
Select wellhead equipment using the full specification, not pressure rating alone. The exact rating and qualification scope must be verified against current manufacturer documents and the project’s approved design.
